Mistinguett
Lot n° 309
25,4cmx29,2cm
This may be the last work accomplished by Charles Gesmar. It also may have been partially created by Gesmar and completed by a successor after he died. We cannot make a determination. This is a watercolor, pen and ink maquette for Mistinguett's revue "Paris qui Tourne," which opened at the Moulin-Rouge on April 18, 1928. Gesmar died on February 27 of that year. The artistic style is clearly Gesmar, but what appears to be the signature (small, wedged between the stem of the "M" and the "P" of "Paris") reads "Goelle" or "Joelle." In the margins, in pencil, is written "affichs" and "Miki, merci, Pilou". It remains a beautiful work, clearly within Gesmar's aesthetic.
